Ex-Goa cricketer dies after collapsing on cricket field
The deceased cricketer represented Goa in 2 first-class games and 8 List A games during the 90s.
The beautiful game of cricket has been rocked by another fatal injury on the field. In the latest incident that has sent shockwaves in the cricketing circles, former Goa cricketer Rajesh Ghodge died after collapsing on the cricket ground while playing a local tournament in Margao town in South Goa on Sunday. Ghodge, who was 43-year-old, was soon taken to the hospital before he succumbed.
Secretary of Margao Cricket Club, Poorv Bhembre opened up on the incident, saying that the deceased cricketer was batting on 30 and was standing at the non-striker’s end when he collapsed. The organisers of the tournament did not waste any time in taking the cricketer to the nearby ESI hospital, from where he was shifted to a private health facility in Margao town, located 30 km south of Panaji. But unfortunately, Ghodge could not be saved.
Bhembre also confirmed that the former cricketer had no history of medical issues, saying: “He used to play cricket almost everyday. We are completely shocked with what has happened today.”
The deceased cricketer represented Goa in 2 first-class games and 8 List A games during the 90s. He scored 76 runs in the red-ball cricket and 115 in white-ball cricket including a fifty.
Unfortunate deaths on cricket field
Ghodge is the not the first cricketer to die due to an injury sustained or experiencing any medical condition on the cricket field.
The first death on the field took place way back in 1870 when a 25-year old George Summers was struck on the head while batting for Nottinghamshire against the MCC at Lord’s and succumbed to his death. Andy Ducat, Abdul Aziz, Wilf Slack, Raman Lamba, Wasim Raja, Zulfiqar Bhatti, Phil Hughes are some other players who met a tragic end because of their love for the game.
