India have produced very few match-winners like Yuvraj Singh in the limited-overs format. The southpaw played a part in almost every major win that India registered in ODIs and T20Is in the last decade. From blasting 84 against a star-studded Australian bowling on his debut, the heroics in the NatWest final, hitting six sixes in an over in the World T20 to his Player of the Tournament performance in India’s victorious campaign in World Cup 2011, Yuvraj’s contribution is immense in shaping up the nation’s fortunes in the limited-overs format.

No surprises then that he used to be the biggest attractions during the IPL auction not very long ago. Four years ago, Royal Challengers Bangalore had bought him for a record price of INR 14 crore. In the following year, the Delhi franchise spent more and secured his services by spending a whopping INR 16 crore. But since then, Yuvraj’s price has dipped. In 2016, Yuvraj Singh went to Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 7 crore before being bought by Kings XI Punjab for INR 2 crore.

And he must have feared the worst after going unsold in the first round of the recently-concluded IPL auction. The reason behind the snub was obvious. Yuvraj has looked like a pale shadow of his former self in recent times and franchises made it crystal clear that they were not willing to take the gamble. In the last edition of the IPL, Yuvraj had managed to score just 65 in 8 innings. His performance in the domestic arena has been poor too.

But Mumbai Indians took the gamble and bought Yuvraj at his base price of INR 1 crore. Now only time will tell whether Yuvraj justifies the faith or not but for the time being the cricket fraternity is delighted that the legendary cricketer was not embarrassed in the auction.

Ganguly delighted

Among the many who are happy with Yuvraj getting the deal is his first India captain Sourav Ganguly. The legendary skipper, who played a crucial role in shaping Yuvraj’s career, took to Twitter to express his delight and wished him, writing, “Extremely happy to see Yuvraj singh picked by mumbai …has been a great player for the country in shorter format ..good wishes to him @YUVSTRONG12”
