Faf du Plessis has no intention to quit captaincy
South Africa suffered yet another early exit from an ICC event, after England defeated Sri Lanka in their group match to become the second team to qualify for the semis after West Indies from South Africa’s group in the ongoing World T20 2016.
South African T20 skipper Faf du Plessis however, has ruled out stepping down from captaincy anytime soon. He said that he was happy and honored to lead the South African team in the T20 format. AB de Villiers leads South Africa in Tests and ODIs, after Hashim Amla stepped down from captaincy after the series loss to India.
South Africa were favorites coming into the tournament but suffered a shock loss to England, who chased down a record total of 229 at Wankhede and then lost to West Indies in a low-scoring match on a turning pitch at Nagpur. They did finish their tournament on a good note, winning their match against Sri Lanka by eight wickets in Delhi.
du Plessis admits that his side once again failed to perform at an ICC event, but also termed the World T20 a very tough tournament. But he also said that it wasn’t fair to criticize the team that was rebuilding and reorganizing it’s XI in every format and was taking it step by step.
31-year-old du Plessis however, said that he loved captaining the team in the shortest format and was looking forward to leading the team in the next edition in 2020. He said that he loved playing the T20 format and saw himself playing a major role and contributing a lot towards the team’s success in coming time.
South Africa have only won one major ICC trophy, the 1998 ICC knockouts trophy, held in Bangladesh. They made the 50 over World Cup semi-finals in 1992, 1999 and 2007, while they hosted the first ever World T20 in 2007, they have not won any major ICC event since then.
