The entire cricket fraternity is in a state of shock after the exemplary measures taken by the Cricket Australia (CA) in this whole ball-tampering saga happened during the third Test match between Australia and South Africa. Former Australian skipper Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner have been handed 12-months ban each, while the third culprit in the offensive act Cameron Bancroft is penalized with a ban of nine months.

Former Australian legendary cricketer Shane Warne termed that the punishment given to these cricketers is a bit too harsh for the mistake they have committed.

Many players have done ball-tampering in the past including Sachin Tendulkar: Warne

Warne mentioned that the current South African captain Faf du Plessis was also charged with the ball-tampering offense twice in his career, as was their new-ball bowler Vernon Philander penalized for the same offense. The ICC had then charged the two South African cricketers in accordance with the cricketing laws. While presently, the ICC instigated this current matter of ball-tampering pretty similarly and handed one-match suspension ban and fine of 100% of the match fees to Smith and Bancroft was fined 75 percent of his match fees.

The former Australian leg-spinner went on to add that many more biggest names in the game like Sachin Tendulkar and Michael Atherton have also been involved in the past in the ball-tampering incidents. Former Indian cricketer Sachin was first charged for altering the condition of the ball in 2001 during a Test match, but after some investigations, the charge was altered as ‘cleaning the ball without the umpire’s permission rather than ball tampering’ by the ICC.

“Their (Australia) opposing captain in this series, South Africa’s Faf du Plessis, has been charged with the offense twice, and opening bowler Vernon Philander once,” wrote Warne in his Facebook post.

“The list of players who have been charged with ball tampering is long and contains some of the biggest names in the game, like Sachin Tendulkar and Mike Atherton,” further mentioned the former Aussie cricketer.

Sachin is regarded as one of the finest and greatest ambassadors of the cricket game, not only in India but also in all parts of the globe. Therefore, the cricketer has a huge proud fan following across the globe, who were not at all pleased with the remarks mentioned by Warne to relate the greatest Indian cricketer with the harsh ball-tampering offense.
