Alex Carey, who hit the spotlight with his performance in World Cup 2019 where he scored 375 runs at an average of 62.50, is a new star in the making for Australia in limited-overs. The young cricketer was given the responsibility to stand behind the stumps in the mega-event. The brilliant performances for his country have boosted his confidence and now he desires to be Australia’s newest finisher.

After World Cup 2019, now he has been picked up for the T20I series against Sri Lanka. His exclusion from the Ashes squad had caught the eyes of several cricketers but now he has been rewarded with the spot in the limited-overs. It is a big chance for Alex Carey in order to improve his stats as a T20 player. In 19 T20Is, he has an average of 13.9 which doesn’t justify the calibre he persists as a batsman.

During his time at Sussex, he was handed over a new role as a batter and his average witnessed a significant rise during the England T20 competition, averaging 37.7 and striking at 152.6.

Alex Carey expresses his desire as an Australian cricketer

Alex feels that it was a good opportunity for him to explore his ability to finish games for his side and it same happened in the World Cup. He also gave examples of players like MS Dhoni and Jos Buttler who are best at finishing games, “It was a good opportunity to learn about my game. The World Cup too, coming in at the end, It’s something I see myself doing and getting better at finishing games of cricket. If you look around the world, (MS) Dhoni, (Jos) Buttler are very good at it. For me, I think I’m improving every time I go out there but it’s important I keep learning at the end,” Alex said as quoted by Foxsports.

He also recited his desire to become Australia’s new finisher like James Faulkner who was good at finishing games in his early days. “(We have) the fireworks at the top of the order and hopefully they go big and bat through the innings. If not, there are going to be opportunities for someone through the middle to help finish off games of cricket for Australia and hopefully I can do that,” he added.

On 27th October, in 1st T20I against Sri Lanka, it will be the first occasion that David Warner and Aaron Finch will open the innings for Australia in T20 International since October 2017.
