5 Occasions where the Indian players were booed in India
Here we look at the top five instances when Indian cricketers were booed by the Indian crowds.
2. Sunil Gavaskar at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata:
Following the incidents in 2005, Rahul Dravid jokingly remarked of joining a rare list of players who were booed at home that includes Sunil Gavaskar. Back in 1984, India took the field in a Test match at the Eden Gardens against England under the captaincy of Gavaskar. The management and selectors took a decision of dropping Kapil Dev who played a rash shot in the previous Test in Delhi. The shot played by Kapil turned the tables upside down resulting in an Indian defeat.
Adding to dropping of Kapil, the captain Gavaskar did delay the declaration as Debutant Mohammad Azharuddin and Ravi Shastri added 214 for the 5th wicket at less than 2 runs per over. The section of fans near the Indian dressing room shouted “Gavaskar down, Gavaskar out” whenever the opening batsman came outside. He was hit by fruits when he eventually declared the innings and took the field for England’s innings.
