Five people arrested for gambling in India vs Bangladesh encounter
Where the Indian players brought glory to the country, there were a few who were involved in a shameful incident
For a cricket fan, the semi-final was not a fascinating one as India clinched a ‘one-sided’ victory against The Tigers, Bangladesh at Birmingham on Thursday (15th June).
After winning the toss, India asked Bangladesh to bat first. At a batting friendly wicket, India restricted Bangladesh for 264 runs.
Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma provided the dream start to the Indian team as they put up a partnership of 87 runs, allowing the coming batsmen to play freely. After Shikhar got out, Rohit and Virat made sure that India cross the winning line as they put up 178 runs together.
Five individuals arrested by Berhampur Police
The upset not only came to Bangladeshi fans but also to the people who were allegedly involved in gambling. As per the reports from Business Standard, Berhampur police arrested five persons who were involved in it after India and Bangladesh encounter.
The police claimed that it shattered a racket of digital gambling and recovered a total of 10 mobile phones, 7,00,000 rupees cash, notebooks, and registers with details of the stake money yesterday.
Shantanu Das, The sub-divisional officer of Berhampur said that the accused people were allegedly involved in betting in yesterday’s match between India and Bangladesh in a mobile shop before the police raided the place.
All five people are supposed to be the traders of Berhampur town and were identified as Saroj Kumar Achary (Shop Owner), Kanhu Patra, Raj Kumar Patra, B Koteswar and Suresh Kumar.
Moreover, the police further said that Suresh Kumar had been arrested on the grounds of betting before at the time of Indian Premier League 2017. However, he was released from jail on bail.
Sk Tripathy, the inspector in charge of Bada Bazar further concluded, “We are investigating to ascertain their possible link with bookies in other states.”
