Former England cricketer fumed over Virat Kohli playing County Cricket
"He should be made to suffer and average 30 in England as he has done before," he said.
The Indian captain Virat Kohli has decided to ply his trade in the County Cricket this year ahead of the stern England tour in July. His record in the country is terrible as he averaged 13.40 during his last tour as his weakness against the moving ball was exposed by James Anderson. Kohli seems to be keen on cashing in this time around and will most probably play for Surrey before the start of the tour. However, the former England cricketer Bob Willis is livid over Surrey’s decision to allow the overseas cricketer to play over the available local players.
India is set to play 3 T20 Internationals and as many as ODIs to begin their three-month long tour to England. They will also play a five-match Test series which is expected to be closely fought after what transpired in India’s recent tour to South Africa. India have lost their previous two series in the country and would be eyeing to change the history this year after gaining confidence recently in the rainbow nation.
I can’t stand overseas players in County
Bob Willis was not at all amused after knowing that Virat Kohli opted to play for Surrey in the upcoming County championship in order to hone his skills. “I can’t stand overseas players in county cricket. It doesn’t benefit the players stranded in the second XI year on year and the youngsters. The only way to improve our Test team is to have as many England-qualified players playing in the County Championship as possible,” he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
Willis also believed that Kohli shouldn’t be allowed to play before the Test matches against England and be made to suffer like his previous tour. “Instead, they’re going to pay Kohli, presumably, five figures a match so he can hone his skills in English conditions before a Test series. It’s a nonsense. He should be made to suffer and average 30 in England as he has done before. We don’t want England starting to lose Test matches at home because we’re accommodating all of these visiting players,” he added.
While there are only reports regarding Kohli playing for Surrey, nothing is yet confirmed apart from him playing in the County Championship this year.
