In a play of fate, former India hockey players Rajpal Singh and Gagan Ajit Singh who are now officers in the Punjab police will be a part of the Mohali stadium’s security detail for the World T20 2016 games at the ground.

Rajpal Singh was the captain of the Indian team until 2011 and was the leader of the Indian hockey team which won a Sultan Azlan Shah trophy, India’s first ever commonwealth games medal and also an Asia cup hockey title. He now serves as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP -Traffic) for the city of Mohali.

Gagan Ajit Singh, who was widely regarded as one of the best drag-flickers in the hockey, is now the Superintendent of Police of the city of Mohali. Both of these players were once the part of the Indian hockey national team and now after their careers are over, these players will be seen on another field, as the part of the security team at the Mohali cricket ground that will host the World T20 2016 games.

Gagan Ajit said, “It’s always an honour to don the uniform. First we were serving the country as sportspersons, now we are serving the nation through the police force. I joined the police force in 2007. Doing duty in uniform is always a special feeling.”

He further said that, “There are a lot of Olympians and Arjun awardees in the police. Besides Rajpal and me, there is Baljit Dhillon, Jugraj Singh, and then there is Kamalpreet, Tejbir, so we have lot of officers with sports background.”

Rajpal Singh was removed as the captain of the team because of a player’s revolt that he led against the amount of rewards given to them after the winning of Champions Trophy. He said,” “I can say one thing that only the colour of uniform has changed. First we used to turn out for our country wearing blues and now we are dressed in the khakis. But job remains the same, which is to serve the nation. The spirit remains the same, only field has changed.”
