Former Mumbai cricketer Ranjita Rane passes away after battling cancer

Ranjita Rane, a former Mumbai cricketer, passed away on Wednesday, May 26, after battling cancer. She was in her 40s. From 1995 to 2003, she had played 44 first-class matches. She was a bowling all-rounder, who bowled medium pace for Mumbai. Rane could also hit the ball a long distance and was a more than useful batter.

She started her career at the Indian Gymkhana in Matunga before representing Mumbai. Rane was also known as an efficient cricket scorer. After she breathed her last, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) expressed grief over the development.

“Deeply saddened to inform that ex-Mumbai cricketer and scorer Ranjita Rane has passed away,” a senior Mumbai Cricket Association official was quoted as saying, reported by Hindustan Times.

Rane had been admitted to the hospital for the past fortnight, but she couldn’t come out trumps. In another development, on Tuesday, May 25, Prabhubhai Parmar, who represented Saurashtra in domestic cricket, passed away having caught the COVID-19 virus.

In 1968-69, Parmar had played for Saurashtra in four Ranji Trophy matches. The Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) also dropped in a message for the late cricketer.

“Everyone at SCA is deeply saddened by the sad demise of Prabhubhai Parmar, yesteryear’s Cricketer of Saurashtra. He left for heavenly abode today fighting a hard battle against Covid-19,” the SCA said in a media statement on late Tuesday night.

On Monday, May 24, Parmar’s wife died. Niranjan Shah, the former BCCI and SCA secretary, expressed sorrow at Parmar’s demise. He went down memory lane to meet him at his residence in Bhavnagar in 2017.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to a number of demises in the cricket fraternity. Indian women’s cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy’s mother and sister died in April and May. In the month of May, Chetan Sakariya, who played for the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the 2021 IPL, lost his father to the virus.

Former Indian pacer RP Singh and Piyush Chawla, who’s a part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), lost their fathers as well. In India, the second wave of COVID-19 has been wreaking havoc as the death toll keeps on increasing at an alarming rate.
