South African batting legend AB de Villiers missed out on Royal Challengers Bangalore’s first two games due to an injury. But he announced himself in his first match of the season (RCB’s third), royally.
Making his maiden appearance in the 10th edition after recovering from a back injury, one of the most widely loved cricketers, AB struck a brilliant 89 off 46 but it wasn’t enough to set a difficult score for the hosts, who chased down the target of mere 149 in only 14.3 overs.
There are many batsmen who intimate bowlers. Some say, Kohli, other says Steve Smith. But former South African quick Allan Donald has singled out de Villiers as the scariest player on the planet after the RCB star’s phenomenal batting display.
De Villiers came in as a replacement for Chris Gayle at Indore’s Holkar Stadium. Although Royal Challengers slumped to an eight-wicket loss, de Villiers innings was studded with three boundaries and nine sixes.
The former South African pacer, who has 330 wickets from 72 Tests, tweeted,
I did battle against some serious batters in my time. @ABdevilliers17 is the scariest player on the planet I have ever seen. #breathtaking

“AB de Villers, what are you made of?” Sanjay Manjrekar asked.
Some of his shots were out of the world. There were those typical stand-and-deliver blows straight down the ground. “He plays these shots with amazing ease, it’s unbelievable,” Laxman Sivaramakrishnan said in the commentary box. “He’s in a different league altogether.”
RCB will next face off against Mumbai Indians at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on April 14. Meanwhile, their regular skipper Virat Kohli also confirmed that he will be playing the next game against Mumbai. With AB, Virat Kohli and Kedar Jadhav in the same batting line-up, RCB is unarguably the most formidable side in this year’s contest.
