Former wicket-keeper Vijay Yadav named fielding coach of India A

Former Indian wicket-keeper batsman Vijay Yadav has been named as the new fielding coach of the India A team. Yadav will take the responsibility for the upcoming India A tour of South Africa. Yadav, who played First Class cricket for Haryana during his playing years, confirmed the news. As per the quotes in the New Indian Express, Vijay Yadav conceded that he got the call from the BCCI officials today evening (Thursday).

He further conceded that the team will be leaving for the tour on 22nd July. However, he will be joining the side a couple of days late since he has to get his paperwork sorted before flying to South Africa. Yadav is currently in Mumbai.

“Yes, it’s just couple of hours back that I was told about my appointment as the fielding coach of the India A team. The squad is leaving day after tomorrow (July 22nd) but I may have to join a couple of days late. I am now rushing to Mumbai and my paperwork and visa formalities will be completed there,” quoted Vijay Yadav.

Other options considered

Meanwhile, a BCCI official conceded that the fielding coach of the India Women side, Biju George, would take over the responsibility. However, the officials later discussed the name of Yadav and finalized it. The void for the fielding coach was created after regular fielding coach of India A, Abhay Sharma, is already occupied with the India U19 assignment in England.

The thought of a wicketkeeper being named the coach came up since a lot of budding wicketkeepers are in the India A squad at the moment. Vijay Yadav played 1 Test and 19 ODIs during the 1992-93 season for India.

“Earlier, it was decided that Biju George will go but after deliberations, Vijay Yadav’s name was recommended. Being a wicketkeeper, he could also help out the likes of Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan,” a BCCI official quoted.
