As the ICC’s biggest event is closing in, many teams have decided to not allow their major players to participate in this year’s IPL after a certain date. The Indian team management has already fixated 12 or 13 spots already for the upcoming ICC World Cup squad. The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) has, however, disclosed that not only them but also the IPL franchises will decide on how many IPL matches will the Indian players feature.
Now that the developments for the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) are underway, the India selectors are also concerned about the players who have been selected in the World Cup squad. Like other teams, even the Indian management is concerned about the player injuries. The selectors haven’t made a decision on key Indian players’ availability in the IPL yet.
Moreover, the BCCI has now unveiled the fact that the decision of franchise owners is also significant since the players in question have signed lucrative contracts with them.
Factors to be considered
Factors, as disclosed by BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary, that will determine the availability of key Indian players in the IPL 2019 are: workload, this factor is player dependent and each player will be given a choice of flexibility regarding the number of matches they’re ready to participate in; the selectors will also have a say on the number of matches each player, the ones who are a part of the World Cup squad, is allowed to feature in.
In addition to these obvious factors, the board has decided to extend the constituents that decide player availability in IPL 2019 games. Those include: the evaluation of the head coach Ravi Shastri and also the judgement of his fellow assistant coaches; and finally, the BCCI has added that the opinions of the franchises owning the player contracts will also have a say- the idea is to respect the lucrative deals that have been offered to the players, even though their first responsibility is national duty.
The BCCI is likely to address the subject of interest in a discussion that’s scheduled for March 7 in New Delhi. “Selectors are deciding on which all players representing India at World Cup should be given how much rest during the IPL. The decision of franchise owners is also important in this because they have signed a contract with those players,” Amitabh Chaudhary was quoted as saying by Times Now.
