Franchises set to send a letter to BCCI president questioning IPL prize money cut
The eight owners will hope that the BCCI will respond to the request and can resolve the issue raised.
Just before the thirteenth edition of the IPL is set to take off from the 29th of March, the owners of all the eight franchises have come together to seek justice against the cost-cutting scheme introduced by the BCCI earlier.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India introduced a revised prize money scheme which entitles the winners with 10 Crores and so on reducing all of the prize amounts by 50%. This move from the BCCI has led to some discomfort to the franchise owners.
They have decided to take up this issue to the BCCI through a letter signed by all eight owners. This united action from all the franchises will certainly send a heatwave to the president of BCCI, Sourav Ganguly. The letter is expected to reach him in the next 24 hours.
“While Delhi Capitals did start discussions, it is a decision that was reached upon after all the eight franchises agreed to it. The letter that is set to be sent to the board president will have the signature of the owners of all the eight teams. The major concern is cutting down on the prize money by 50 per cent,” the source said.
Sources confirm that long and reasonable discussions and meetings were held among the franchises before they came up with the decision to contact BCCI. The owners are unhappy and they want the board to acknowledge this fact. The owners also feel they were let out of the picture before bringing new actions into course.
“Moreover, we were not even kept in the loop. It has come to a scenario where we get to know of things from the media. Even in case of the All-Stars Game that was being planned, we were the last to come to know of it. This is not how it works,” the source added as quoted by India TV.
The discussions between the franchises took place in a very short span of time. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings were the last two franchises to be contacted and approached.
Franchises keep their trust on the board
The Indian Premier League has been one of the most successful domestic leagues in the world. This feat is a result of good coordination and support between the franchises and the board. Although disappointed, the owners believe that this request from them will not go unheard.
“We are confident that the BCCI will also take our concerns into consideration and relook the whole step taken. We have always looked to work keeping in mind what is best for Indian cricket & we also expect their support,” an official of one of the franchises said.
The eight owners will hope that the BCCI will respond to the request and can resolve the issue raised. The first encounter is set to be between MI and CSK in Mumbai.
