Frustrated crowd chants MS Dhoni’s name after Rishabh Pant's mistakes
Pant started feeling the heat due to his poor glove-work.
Rishabh Pant had the chance to all but seal his World Cup spot when he was named in the playing eleven for the fourth ODI against Australia. The youngster was recalled in the ODI team for the series but could not play in any of the first three games with the incumbent MS Dhoni taking care of the wicketkeeping duties. However, Pant did little in the fourth ODI to show that the team-management was wrong to not include him in the playing eleven in the previous games.
The youngster started the proceedings well, impressing with his short cameo with the bat. He came out at No. 5 and hit 36 off 24 including four fours and a six. It was his cameo that helped India recover after losing Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli in quick succession and eventually post a daunting total of 358 for 9 in the allotted 50 overs. But as the game progressed, Pant started feeling the heat due to his poor glove-work.
Pant missed quite a few chances due to his sloppy wicketkeeping and potentially threw away the game in the 44th over when he failed to collect another delivery. On the very first ball of the 44th over bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal, Pant had the chance to stump Ashton Turner. However, the youngster, seen by many as MS Dhoni’s worthy successor, failed to collect the ball, allowing Turner to reach his crease safely.
The crowd then could not take anymore and expressed their displeasure with Pant by reminding him that he was still second-best, by chanting Dhoni’s name.
Here is a clip of the incident:
Turner turns the game:
Pant’s missed stumping proved costly for India as Turner, who was batting on 38 at that time, went on to play a sublime knock of 84 not out to take Australia home in a remarkable fashion. The knock came off just 43 balls and was studded with 5 fours and 6 sixes as Australia crossed the line inside 48 overs.
The five-match series is now locked at 2-2 with the fifth and final game set to be played on March 13 in Delhi.
