Gautam Gambhir in support of CRPF after the attack in J&K
Gambhir has always maintained a pro-armed forces voice and continues to do that.
In Jammu and Kashmir, 2 FIRs have been registered against CRPF’s Srinagar unit over the Nowhatta incident, wherein a stone pelter was run over by a CRPF vehicle when it was trying to escape a violent mob. In the shocking footage from J&K’s Nowhatta which was accessed by Republic TV on Friday (1 June), it can be seen that a group of stone pelters attacked the CRPF vehicle.
In the footage, hundreds of pelters can be seen trying to vandalise the vehicle and overpower the troops. It has been believed that the attack came at a time when the Indian Army was observing Ramzan ceasefire. Reacting to this, the former Delhi Daredevils skipper and prolific left-handed batsman Gautam Gambhir has expressed himself on social media.
He favoured the CRPF jawans and challenged the politicians to live in the disturbed areas of Kashmir without any security. The 36-year-old cricketer mocked the Indian government for conducting talks and not taking any due actions.
He said, “I have a solution: Make it mandatory for politicians to spend a week in troubled parts of Kashmir along with their families&without security. Only then they b allowed to contest 2019 elections. No other way to make them understand the plight of armed forces & a well-meaning Kashmiri.”
“Am devastated. Wonder if India still thinks there is room for talks with stone-pelters! Come on, let’s get real. Show me the political will and my armed forces, my @crpfindia will show you the results’,” he added.
Here is Gambhir’s tweet:
On the cricketing front, Gambhir didn’t have the best of times in the Indian Premier League (IPL), he stepped down as skipper of DD and was thereafter not a part of the playing XI for the rest of the tournament. Many believe it was the last time Gambhir featured in the league in playing capacity.
However, Shreyas Iyer who took over the baton from GG mentioned that it was Gambhir’s own decision to sit out of the side as he wanted to give youngsters an opportunity to express themselves and make a mark. It will be interesting to see what the upcoming season has in store for the veteran.
