Gautam Gambhir slams Delhiites for not caring about the environment
Last Sunday whole of India celebrated the festival of lights, Diwali. From the north to down south a major part of the country was glowing with the light of clay lamps. Diwali marks the victory of light over darkness, of the good over evil but over the years we have attached one particular trend to the celebration which isn’t quite in tone with the original theme of the festival. It’s bursting crackers.
With global warming being the single most dangerous problem to mankind the need is to understand, address and adhere to protecting our environment and that is the reason we saw so many requests coming up from the common citizen and the celebrities alike to say no to firecrackers this Diwali. But some of us, don’t really want to care about all that and just focus on our own share of shallow joy.
They did go on with bursting crackers and the effect was quite evident with the layer of smog in the air a good couple of days after Diwali. Delhi the national capital is already marked one of the most polluted cities and after the festival, the matters worsened. So much so that, Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir couldn’t bear it and decided to tweet about it.
Gautam posted two tweets with which he tried to emphasize on how grave the problem is and how the citizens need to grow up from blaming the authorities for everything and urged them to keep a check on their own habits. “Crackers bursting, Delhi pollution @ record high, children & aged suffering, lungs crying & we call it Happy Diwali. Callous & careless.”

“It’s convenient 2 blame authorities but how about some self-governance? What legacy r we leaving. polluted air & water, adulterated food.”
A good four days after Diwali, Delhi is still covered with a smog blanket while the visibility level has gone down considerably. The air quality index that qualifies the air also showed alarming levels all across the city.
