Geoff Lawson believes that Cummin’s inclusion into the playing XI might end his career
The story of the Australian fast bowler has been a rather curious one with the speedster playing just a solitary test in his career. Cummins’s inclusion to the squad comes five years after he made his debut, where he ran through the rampant South African side to be named as the Man of the match in just his first match.
Ever since then the pacer has not played with the red ball for Australia. His last week Sheffield Shield game for the New South Wales marked his first in almost six years. The fragile bowler has been carefully managed and protected by Cricket Australia.
It was surprising for many a cricketing pundit that Starc’s injury has opened ends for the quickie. Cummins, leapt ahead in front of the other contenders to replace Mitch Starc in the Australian squad.
According to Geoff Lawson, former test quickie believes that the rare chance of a series victory over India has blinded the selectors to take this decision. He further adds that it might put Cummins’ future in jeopardy.
“Cricket Australia have just ignored and gone against their plan. And they’ve already broken Pat once last year by bringing him back too early,” a puzzled and shocked Lawson told foxsports.com.au.
He further clarifies saying that the plan was not for him to play the Test series—it was for him to play and improve in Sheffield Shield which might be useful to assess his condition.
Lawson quickly dismissed the suggestion of Cummins bowling a certain number of overs in the day, or a certain number of spells throughout the innings. Lawson, who also is the assistant coach and bowling coach at New South Wales said that the situation of Cummins’ is very complicated.
The inclusion of Cummins might just hamper the confidence of the other quickie Jackson Bird, and the vice versa would mean more disappointment for Cummins. Cummins’ return to the first-class arena was a successful one with the bowler picking eight wickets in the match against the Reds last week.
Further, Lawson is delighted with Cummins’ progress towards the longer format of the game and said that he is more capable of surviving the harsh environment of test cricket with his recent return.
“If he gets injured this series again, that’s almost wiping off another nine months. He won’t be playing the Ashes next year if he gets injured in this series.” Lawson concluded the segment by raising concerns of injury on the following Ashes.
