Glenn Maxwell is arguably one of the most destructive batsmen, the world has seen, especially in limited-overs cricket. He prefers to dictate terms to the opposition bowlers and doesn’t get perturbed by the big names. However, the same approach has led to his dismissals, which has earned him criticisms from the cricketing fraternity.

Recently, Australia’s squad for their upcoming One-Day International series against England was announced. However, Maxwell couldn’t find a spot in the team. Quite expectantly, after his omission, the batsman expressed his disappointment in an interaction with cricket.com.au and also pledged to change his impression as a cricketer.

“I was extremely disappointed not to be in that one day side, but I completely understood the reasoning from Trevor Hohns that my last 20 ODIs haven’t been good enough, That was the phone call I received. You can’t really say too much to that,” Maxwell jested

The Victorian accepted the team management’s decision and highlighted the reasons behind his eviction from the squad. “I’m sure there’s other stats that probably say that maybe I was a little bit stiff, but there’s stats that say it was my time to be left out. I can’t do too much about it now,” the swashbuckling batsman added.

An inconsistent 2017

Maxwell has been encountering inconsistent form for quite a while now. In 2017, he could only score 272 runs in 13 games at a dismal average of 27.20. He scored a couple of half-centuries against Pakistan in January but hasn’t lived up to expectations thereafter. He also failed to hit his straps in Australia’s previous ODI series against India.

Maxwell looked impressive in patches, but couldn’t get the big scores under his belt. He has struggled to find a rhythm against the spinners, especially Yuzvendra Chahal who got rid of him on quite a few occasions. Maxwell’s new year hasn’t begun on an auspicious note, however, he has the ingredients to turn things around and stake a claim in the national team.
