Glenn Maxwell quashes dressing room brawl reports
An absolutely livid Glenn Maxwell lashed out at Indian journalists on his official twitter account following reports suggesting a brawl in the Kings XI Punjab dressing room. The Kings XI have had a torrid season which seems rather surprising given the fact that they were finalists barely a couple of years back. This season has seen many of the people involved with the Kings XI dragged into one controversy or another. While these allegations have been vehemently denied, most lately by Glenn Maxwell, the cloud of uncertainty looms over the Kings XI Punjab side.
A report suggested that Shaun Marsh, who was the beneficiary of a back injury, was sent back home not due to the injury, but for instigating a bust-up in the dressing room. The Australian southpaw had been one of the best batsmen for the Kings XI with 159 runs in 6 matches. He was eventually replaced by former South African skipper Hashim Amla midway through the season.
Further reports go on to suggest that Marsh had thrown a punch at a Punjab teammate and a brawl had ensued. The source also said that this might not be related to the change of captaincy, as also said by the report. However, as a result of this, Marsh was flown back.
Marsh’s outburst was seemingly provoked by a change in guard. David Miller, who had been named as the skipper in the summer had failed to inspire the Kings, thereby provoking a change in captaincy. Murali Vijay was thereby named as the skipper of the side. Just before Miller had been sacked, there had been an unsavoury incident in the dressing room, as revealed.
Immediately after Marsh returned to Australia, KXIP’s decisions came under question when they played three overseas players in their team for the next match, replacing Marsh with Manan Vohra. The Kings take on Mumbai Indians on Friday, aiming to lift themselves from the bottom, something that has eluded them in the current season.
Maxwell, however, reiterated these ‘ridiculous’ claims, stating that Marsh was indeed sent home due to the injury and not a brawl. In another tweet, Maxwell lashed out at the Indian media for publishing such reports. The Kings XI Punjab face the Mumbai Indians on Friday.
