Former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith recently expressed his concerns over the batting technique of English opener Keaton Jennings. Jennings scored 48 in his most recent knock in the English whites against South Africa in the third Test. Albeit he scored decently, Smith questioned the way Jennings reached there. He cited that throughout the innings, Jennings ended up edging many deliveries – which is not a bright sign for any young player in the longer run.

In the match, team England thumped South Africa to take a 2-1 lead in the series with one more match to play. Although the hosts registered a win, they still have some thinking to do in regard to Jennings’ place in the final game. Graeme Smith suggested that the selectors should consider another option since England are lined up for the big Ashes in the times to come.

“Even though he got 48, there were a lot of edges. If I was a selector, I would be thinking it was time to make a change with the West Indies and then the Ashes coming up,” said Graeme Smith.

Good for South Africa?

On the flip side of it, Smith elaborated the situation in the most idealistic way. As per the quotes in the Indian Express, he conceded that the South African team would love to see Jennings open in the next game as well. Also, Smith added that a place like Australia could be very scary prospect for Keaton Jennings.

“Should England give another player time to settle in? The way that Jennings plays, I think Australia might be quite a scary place for him. It is not easy. These are people’s lives and they are working hard, but I think South Africa would love Jennings to play the final Test match. If you had to ask them they would say, ‘Please pick him’,” conceded the former South African skipper.
