South Africa most successful skipper Graeme Smith has come up with a very interesting idea to judge Test playing nations overall calibre. Reacting to Aakash Chopra’s recent analysis piece, Smith tweeted that if the competition for the top spot is so fierce then the teams should be ranked based on their away records.

Indian commentator and sports analyst Aakash Chopra recently wrote a post on why India will be seated at the top of the Test ranking without any close competition for a long time. Chopra wrote that Indian team’s courage, discipline and versatility along with the long home season will be the key factors which will keep India stay top for a while.

The sports website tweeted: “@cricketaakash on why India will be the top team in Test cricket for a while to come.”

Upon reading the piece, the former Proteas skipper Smith came up with an idea that top ranked team should be judged based on their overseas record. Smith tweeted: With the rankings so tight, maybe the number 1 ranking should be based on the best away record?

Chopra seemed impressed with the suggestion and felt that he was right in a way considering the current cricketing scenario where almost all teams have been consistently doing well in home conditions while getting thrashed on away tours. Teams including powerhouses like England, South Africa, India and Australia totally dominate the opposition in tailored conditions while taste dirt on away tours.

Aakash replied: Something worth pondering over….considering this era of home dominance.
