Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka were supporting India during their clash against England. A win to the Men in Blue had given them a realistic chance to make it to the semi-finals. But India lost the game which effectively knocked out Sri Lanka and has also left the other two teams on the tenterhooks. Interestingly, Pakistan is still dependent on their arch-rivals to beat Bangladesh on Tuesday as it will rule the Tigers out of the contention as well.
However, the former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali claimed that Virat Kohli and his men would not want Pakistan to qualify for the knockouts and they will deliberately lose their last two matches. Rather his comments were before the England-India game when Sri Lanka were also alive in the competition. Reacting to his unsavoury comments Harbhajan Singh has slammed Basit and asked if he is stupid to talk like this.
“What makes him say that? Is he stupid? I don’t know what is he smoking, seriously! He’s got to be on a different planet in order for him to talk ill like this. That’s probably the way they have played their cricket and that’s how they see the game,” Bhajji said while speaking to India Today.
Imran bhai should fix him
Moreover, Basit Ali had gone on record to say that New Zealand had lost to Pakistan deliberately in 1992 to play the semi-final in their own backyard. Harbhajan Singh wasn’t amused after hearing this and requested the current Pakistan Prime Minister and the 1992 World Cup winning captain Imran Khan to take action against Basit Ali.
“I think Imran bhai should fix him now. I think he needs to be fixed because you can’t put your team down like this by saying that ’92 was fixed and now 2019 is fixed as well,” Harbhajan further added.
As far as the 2019 World Cup is concerned, Pakistan would want New Zealand to defeat England now on July 3 which will then spice up their last league game against Bangladesh.
