Mohammad Kaif announced the retirement from all professional and competitive cricket today. He last played an international match way back in 2006 but was active in the domestic cricket. He led Chhattisgarh team last season in the Ranji Trophy in an attempt to mentor the youngsters. However, he has been receiving a lot of wishes from the cricketing fraternity after deciding to hang his boots. Harbhajan Singh has also joined the list as he praised Kaif for his contribution to the Indian cricket.

Kaif retired on a memorable day for him and India as July 13 is the same day when the Men in Blue defeated England in the final of the tri-series exactly 16 years ago. They had chased down the total of 326 runs from a hopeless position of 146/5. It was the partnership between Yuvraj Singh and Kaif which reignited the hope for the visitors and the latter then went on to play an unbeaten knock of 87 runs which is still fresh in the minds of the fans.

He is like Azharuddin

Harbhajan Singh, in an interview to Sportstar, showered praises on Mohammad Kaif, especially for his fielding. His fielding exploits changed the dynamics of the Indian cricket in the early 2000s. Bhajji went on term him as the best fielder in India after Mohammad Azharuddin.

“He gave his 100 per cent in whatever he did. Be it batting, bowling or fielding. He was the one who worked extremely hard on his fielding and he was the best we had. Kaif took the lead on the field. He was the best after Mohammad Azharuddin when it came to fielding,” Harbhajan who is in London currently said.

Bhajji also felt that Kaif was unlucky and could’ve played for more years while also highlighting the way he grabbed every opportunity that came his way with both the hands. “It is all about the right opportunities. I agree that he could have played a bit more cricket for India, but he made the most of what came his way. He was a committed cricketer. But yes, thoda aur khel sakta tha woh (he could have played a bit longer),” Bhajji added.
