Harsha Bhogle chooses RCB match over Karnataka assembly drama

Indian politics witnessed one of its most dramatic scenarios in Karnataka as BS. Yeddyurappa held the position as the Chief Minister for just three days. However, the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season had the attention of the fanatics divided in either of the avenues. Bengaluru on Saturday largely set its sights either on the theatrical political developments gripping the state or the city’s IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore’s destiny in the riveting tournament as a loss for RCB would mean an exit in the league stage itself.

While the opinions were divided in the state whether to follow city’s cricket fortunes or the power battle in the state assembly, eminent cricket broadcaster Harsha Bhogle had a clear-cut answer. The 56-year-old commentator and cricket pundit prioritized watching RCB scampering for a place in the playoffs against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur instead of chasing the political hysteria in the state.

“Much rather follow Bengaluru in the IPL than in the Assembly!” Harsha Bhogle had tweeted.

The dilemma

On May 15, after the declaration of results, BJP and the Congress-JDS staked claim to form the government after the result was a fractured one with the BJP failing to get a majority despite being the single largest party.

However, on May 16, Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala invited BJP to form the government and asked B S Yeddyurappa to take oath as chief minister, irking the Congress-JDU alliance. Consequently, Congress knocked the doors of Supreme Court adding to the ongoing political tension. And to top it all on Saturday, after the court decided that Mr Yeddyurappa would have to prove the numbers in a floor test, and during a nationally-televised trust vote, he opted to cry and resign after being at the helm for just three days.

At the cricketing end, RCB failed to garner a win in their last league match, squandering all hopes of qualification. The Virat Kohli led squad lost by 30 runs to Rajasthan Royals to conclude as what could be termed a mixed campaign.
