After experiencing a seven-year stint with the Kolkata Knight Riders as a captain, Gautam Gambhir was snubbed by Shah Rukh Khan’s franchise earlier this year. The former Indian opener took over the leadership responsibilities of the Knight Riders club in 2011. He boosted their performance to a greater extent which eventually earned them two IPL titles.
But his reputation went in vain as he was left out of the KKR’s Retention list. The Kolkata owners didn’t even raise their arms for the left-hander in the auction. Later, the Delhi franchise showed interest on the homeboy and picked him for 2.8 crore rupees.
Taking his captaincy record into consideration, the former Indian opener was recently appointed as the captain of Delhi Daredevils for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League which is scheduled to begin on April 7.
Ponting is coming to a winning group
Speaking to the reporters for the first time as DD skipper at a Star Sports event, Gambhir revealed that he is very glad to have the former Australian captain, Ricky Ponting as their team coach.
The 36-year-old then dubbed Delhi Daredevils as a winning unit and said, “I think Ricky Ponting is coming to a winning group, three times he has been a part of a World Cup-winning team. As a player and as a captain he has seen ups and downs.”
“He has captained Australia for a very long time. It is important for any player if a winner comes to your side. He has seen every kind of situation and knows how to take best out of any player. It is an advantage for any captain if a coach like him comes to the team.” he further added.
Finally, Gambhir expressed his gratitude to his home franchise and told that he always desired to return and play for Delhi. He also believes that this would be a perfect place to finish his career.
