Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has given his take on Sanju Samson’s batting and why he has not been able to fix his place in the Indian cricket team. The right-handed batter has been part of the Indian squad several times but has failed to perform consistently.
Leading Rajasthan Royals in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL), Samson amassed 458 runs in the edition. However, he failed to convert his starts to big ones. The 27-year-old scored only two fifties in the latest edition of the IPL. The right-handed batter has been selected in the Indian squad to play Ireland in a two-match T20I series starting on June 26.
If Sanju Samson’s shot selection gets better then he will be more consistent: Sunil Gavaskar
“Everybody deserves more chance but you got to make the most of them. What has led Sanju Samson down, because all of us know the tremendous ability that he has, is his shot selection while playing for India. He looks to attack from the first ball and even in T20Is, there is an opportunity to get your feet going, get your eye … you know with the light and pitch, etc.”
“So, yes if his shot selection gets better then he will be so much more consistent whether it is for India or his franchise. Then there will be nobody asking questions about his place in the team.”
To note, Samson was not picked in the Indian squad for the T20I series against South Africa which did not go down well with several Indian fans. Nonetheless, as mentioned above, the selectors have picked Samson in the squad to tour Ireland. The right-handed batter will be looking to use the opportunity and score big runs in the upcoming tour.
India’s T20I squad vs Ireland: Hardik Pandya (Captain), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (vice-captain), Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav, Venkatesh Iyer, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshal Patel, Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik.
