'He put up zero performance' - Pakistan fan slams Imran Khan, questions his contribution in 1992 World Cup win
While Imran Khan is a revered figure in Pakistan cricket, one of their fans is not at all convinced that the ex-cricketer played a crucial role in the World Cup triumph.
Imran Khan will be always remembered for leading Pakistan to their first-ever and only World Cup so far. In 1992, the legendary captain led a ragged Pakistan team to the pinnacle of world cricket against all the odds. Pakistan were all but eliminated from the competition before they turned their fortunes in style and went on to create history.
With only one win from their opening five games, Pakistan were on the verge of elimination. However, the Imran Khan-led side registered three wins from their last three group games to enter the knock-out stage. In the semifinal, they defeated tournament favourites New Zealand, who had won seven of their eight round-robin games.
Pakistan chased down New Zealand’s 262/7 to book their spot in the final. Inzamam-ul-Haq was the star of the show, smashing 60 from just 37 balls to power his country to a first-ever World Cup final. In the all-important title-decider, Pakistan were up against England. The game also turned out to be Imran Khan’s last-ever ODI appearance and he made it a memorable one.
The former captain led by example with the bat, hitting a crucial 72 to propel Pakistan to 249/6 after their 50 overs. In reply, England were all out for 227. Imran Khan has been hailed as a hero since then and rightly so.
Pakistan fan bashes Imran Khan
While Imran Khan is a revered figure in Pakistan cricket, one of their fans is not at all convinced that the ex-cricketer played a crucial role in the World Cup triumph. On a video shared on Twitter, a fan is seen having a conversation with a reporter on Imran Khan’s role in the 1992 World Cup.
“It is the biggest lie. I watched every match. The first match which Pakistan played against West Indies, they lost. Imran Khan did not play that match. The second match they played against Zimbabwe, which they won thanks to Aamer Sohail’s century. In the third match against England when they were all out for 74, he did not play the match,” said the fan as quoted by Yahoo Cricket.
“In the one against South Africa, Imran Khan got out at just 10. Against India, he got out at 0. Against Australia, he got out at 7. Next match was against Sri Lanka. Imran Khan once again got out at 0. Neither did he play in the semi-final, which was one of the most important matches. Imran Khan scored 44 runs in 93 balls. Others who came after him won the match for the team, what did he do? Luckily Inzamam-ul-Haq scored a 37 ball 60,” he further added.
He was also not impressed with Imran Khan’s performance in the final despite the latter scoring a fighting fifty as the fan said– “In the final, Wasim Akram took out Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis, otherwise what did he do? Now see captains like Virat Kohli, New Zealand captain (Kane Williamson) and England’s Eoin Morgan, they don’t score centuries?
Do they only sit on the fact that they are captains? What did he do? He put up zero performance in the 1992 World Cup. It is due to Wasim Akram in the final and Inzaman in the semi-final (that Pakistan won the World Cup).”
