Here is why MS Dhoni was not inducted into ICC Hall of Fame this year
Dhoni announced his retirement on 15th August 2020.
MS Dhoni shook the cricket world and fans by drawing curtains on his illustrious international career on 15th August through a simple Instagram post. Right after the news spread like a wildfire, congratulatory messages and posts started raining in full flow. While some demanded farewell match for their beloved captain, some still wished to see him in Indian jersey in the 2021 T20 World Cup.
Putting an end to his sparkling career, he remains the only captain in the world to have lifted all the ICC trophies ie, World Cup 2011, Champions Trophy 2013, and T20 World Cup 2007. According to reports, former captain cool wanted to feature in the 2020 T20 World Cup, but ICC’s decision to postpone it made him change his mind.
Just after the amazing cricketer bowed out of the international formats, ICC inducted names of three players into the prestigious Hall of Fame. These names were were Lisa Sthalekar, Jacques Kallis, and Zaheer Abbas. Fingers started pointing the apex board for not including great like MS Dhoni, who is considered one of the most successful captains in the history of the cricket world.
Here is the reason
The ICC rule clearly says that a player can only be eligible to get inducted in Hall of Fame five years after his/her retirement. That is why the Hall of fame saw the entry of Rahul Dravid and Anil Kumble before legend Sachin Tendulkar. Dravid, who bid farewell to international cricket in 2012, got inducted in the precious club in 2018.
Sachin Tendulkar also made it to the Hall of Fame in 2019 after receiving a grand farewell in 2013 owing to his retirement. CSK skipper who just retired from the game 12 days back will be eligible in the year 2025 to be part of the valuable club.
Star batsman Virender Sehwag and ace pacer Zaheer who bid adieu to the international cricket in 2015, are strong contenders to get inducted into the Hall of fame in the future. Foreign players like Michael Clarke, Graeme Smith, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene will be turning eligible the very next year to get inducted into this prestigious lot.
