Here's the reason why the Women's T20I tri-series is not being played under lights

India Women is currently hosting England and Australia for the tri-series in the shortest format of the game which commenced on March 22. All the matches of the tournament will be played at the Brabourne Stadium and will be played early in the morning at 10 AM. The decision of BCCI to play T20 Internationals so early has surprised many as it affects the players and most importantly the turnout of fans. However, the reason has now revealed for the BCCI staging T20Is so early and not under lights.

Never in Indian cricket has BCCI hosted a T20I during the day time with all the matches being played in the evening at 7 PM for the crowd to turn out in huge numbers. The opening match between India Women and Australia Women also saw a sparse crowd which completely in contrast to the recently concluded ODI series. All the three ODIs were jam-packed as India received full support.

What is the reason?

According to the report in Mid-day, the Brabourne Stadium could not host the day-night matches which was the reason the Indian board decided to stage the matches early in the morning. “It’s a private club. There was no possibility of having matches under lights. Then, the team that is not playing on the following day would want a practice session. So, that session can be scheduled in the afternoon, immediately after the match,” an official said.

There was also a chance of all the matches being held at the Wankhede Stadium but the Mumbai T20 League concluded only on Wednesday which meant that the curators wouldn’t have got enough time to prepare the surface for the tri-series. Even the Mumbai Indians are soon kick-starting their preparatory camp for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
