Herschelle Gibbs, Owais Shah and Manoj Prabhakar apply for India Women’s team coach job
Ramesh Powar's contract wasn't renewed.
India Women’s cricket is currently in the middle of a rough patch. They captured the imaginations of the supporters after their stupendous performance in the World Cup last year in England where they finished as the runners-up, having beaten by England in the final at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. Earlier this year, Tushar Arothe stepped down as India women’s coach.
The same was following his alleged feud with the team. Thereafter, former Indian cricketer, Ramesh Powar was appointed as their interim coach, but even he has had a torrid time with the team. Subsequently, the Board of Control for Cricket in India didn’t renew his contract and put out applications and kept Friday, December 14 as a deadline for submitting the applications.
Three new applicants
Recently, it has been learned that former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs, former England batsman Owais Shah and former Indian speedster Manoj Prabhakar have applied for the post as per reports in Mid Day. Powar’s issues were mostly with experienced batsman Mithali Raj, who slammed the coach left, right and centre for showing disrespect towards her and humiliating her.
The 36-year-old wrote a letter to the BCCI after she was dropped from India’s semi-final match against England in Antigua, which India lost by eight wickets, during the recently concluded Women’s World T20 in West Indies. Previously, India won all their four group matches against New Zealand, Pakistan, Ireland, and Australia respectively. Mithali won a couple of Man of the Match awards.
She missed the match against Meg Lanning’s Southern Stars due to a knee niggle but was excluded for the next match as skipper Harmanpreet Kaur mentioned that the team wanted to continue with the winning combination, which eventually didn’t work out. In the meantime, the likes of Harmanpreet and opening batsman Smriti Mandhana don’t want Powar to be removed as the coach.
