'He's a phenomenal leader' - Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler back struggling Eoin Morgan
Eoin Morgan was dismissed for successive ducks in the recently concluded series against the Netherlands before he was omitted from the final ODI due to injury concerns.
England crushed the Netherlands in the final ODI as they completed a clean sweep in the three-match ODI series. But the form of skipper Eoin Morgan remains a concern for the England team management. Stand-in skipper Jos Buttler and Test skipper Ben Stokes have come in support of the struggling limited-overs skipper Eoin Morgan.
Morgan has endured a torrid year with the bat as he has failed to register a single half-century for England. The series against Netherlands could not have panned out any worse for the southpaw as he failed to open his account in the two matches. There have been serious questions about his place in the current side and the squad for the T20 World Cup later this year.
England’s new Test skipper Stokes is never shy from making his voice heard, and he backed his limited-overs teammate to come good with the bat. The all-rounder accused the media of stirring things as he believes the players have always backed Morgan in the team.
“Well, he’s only had two low scores so I wouldn’t say he’s going through a hard time at the moment. I think the press are the only ones giving him a hard time, and I think the players have shown it’s not an issue with them. People are allowed to not score many runs, and more than that, he’s our captain. He’s a phenomenal leader and always will be, so I’ve got no issues with anything going on with him at the moment,” Stokes said to the reporters.
‘You forget what a brilliant batsman he’s been for England: Jos Buttler
Unlike Morgan, Jos Buttler has been scoring runs at will, and that too at a terrifying strike rate. The attacking batter was in sensational form in the recently concluded ODI series and has shown no signs of slowing down after a terrific IPL 2022. The wicketkeeper-batter led the side in the final game in the absence of the southpaw and has revealed that people often forget about his skipper’s batting prowess due to his success as a leader.
“I can’t put into words what he’s achieved. Everyone always talks about his captaincy, but you forget what a brilliant batsman he’s been for England in over 200 ODIs – that doesn’t just go away overnight. Everyone in the team is backing him,” Buttler said.
