Perhaps this partnership was made in one of the most glorifying run feasts in the history of test cricket at Colombo in August, 1997. Sri Lanka went onto score the highest total in test cricket of 952 runs in a single innings. Jayasuriya anchored the partnership by scoring 340 runs while Mahanama, who came into bat when Sri Lanka were slightly inclined to the spots of bother at 39 for 1, smashed a smart knock of 225 runs. The match was drawn and there were no second innings in the game.
