How does the World Test Championship points table look like after Australia's win?

The Tim Paine-led Australia team decimated the New Zealand side in the third Test match at the Sydney Cricket Ground on the fourth day and registered a thumping 279-run victory and pocketed the series 3-0. With this victory, the Australian team also cemented their second spot in the points table of the ICC World Test Championship and have inched closer to the no.1 ranked Indian team.

Marnus Labuschagne was named the Player of the Match for his double ton and a half-century in this match and was also named the Player of the Series with over 500 runs to his name. However, the hero with the ball in this match proved to be off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who picked fifer in both innings and helped Australia rout New Zealand.

The Black Caps were being set to chase 416 runs in the final innings. Lyon picked 10/118 in the match, as the Kangaroos earned back their dominant role after the return of David Warner and Steve Smith.

Australia now has 296 points, just behind India’s 360 points

It has been a good start to Australia in the ICC World Test Championship as they first drew the Ashes 2019 and gained 56 points. Then they defeated Pakistan 2-0 at home and pocketed full 120 points and now have another 120 points to their name after 3-0 drubbing of the Kiwis. They have played 10 Tests and have won 7 out of them with losing two and drawing one match.

Meanwhile, India remains no.1 with 360 points after winning all seven of their Tests in 2019. Their next assignment will be against New Zealand where they will play two Tests. They are also scheduled to play Tests on their tour to Sri Lanka later this year as well, but nothing has been confirmed yet. India will be touring Australia for four Tests at the end of 2020.

Meanwhile, New Zealand remains on 60 points after two series, while Sri Lanka and Pakistan are ahead of the Black Caps with 80 points to their name. On the other hand, England and South Africa are currently engaged in a four-Test series with Proteas having won the first Test match in Centurion. The West indies and Bangladesh are yet to earn any points having played one series each under the ICC World Test Championship.
