How Virat Kohli has done in ODIs vs England compared to India’s top 4
Kohli has some catching up to do when it comes to playing in England.
India started their long awaited series against England this summer with a bang, defeating the hosts in the first T20 International (T20I) by 8 wickets after putting up a solid performance both with the bat and the ball.
After the three-game T20I series, India will lock horns with England in a three-match one-day international (ODI) series as well between July 12 and 17. India haven’t lost a bilateral series to England since 2012-13 and will look to win their fifth straight ODI series versus the hosts. However, it will be easier said than done against a resurgent England who have defeated a number of Test-playing nations in the recent past and lost a one-off match series only against Scotland.
India will be banking on their batsmen to defeat England, especially skipper Virat Kohli, who was in a super human form in the last ODI series that India played in South Africa, hammering the Proteas 5-1.
Here we take a look at how the top 5 Indian batsmen have done against England in ODIs (and the list includes Kohli):
1. Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs in 463 matches; average 44.83; strike rate 86.23; hundreds 49; fifty 96)
The all-time best in the batsmen’s list, Sachin Tendulkar also did well against England with who he played in 37 ODI games. He has scored 1,455 runs against them at an average of 44.09 and strike rate of 89.20 with two hundreds and 10 fifties.
In England, Tendulkar played 17 ODI games versus the hosts, scoring 639 runs at an average of 39.93 and strike rate of 85.08 with the highest score of 105 not out scored at Chester-le-Street. He also has four half-centuries against England in England with two among them being 90s (one even 99!).
In India, Tendulkar has almost an identical record against England, scoring 631 runs in 16 matches but at a much better average of 45.07 and strike rate of 93.20. He has one hundred against England at home (120) which he scored in Bengaluru during the 2011 ICC World Cup besides four fifties.
At neutral venues, Tendulkar played four games against England in which he scored 185 runs at an average of 61.66 and strike rate of 91.13. He hit two fifties (one being 91) in these venues.
2. Sourav Ganguly (11,363 runs in 311 matches; average 41.02; strike rate 73.70; hundreds 22; fifties 72)
Though a distant second to Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly has been India’s most prolific second-highest scorer in the ODIs and have done decently against England. He has scored 975 runs in 26 matches against the Englishmen at an average of 39.00 and strike rate of 76.11. He has one century (117 not out in Colombo in 2002) and seven fifties against the same opponents.
In England, Ganguly has scored 565 runs in 16 matches at an average of 35.31 and strike rate of 74.14. He has five half-centuries against England in their den with the highest being 90 at Lord’s in 2004.
At home, one of India’s most successful captains has scored 265 runs against England in five games at a much higher average of 47.20 and strike rate of 78.92. His highest score against England at home is 80, scored in Mumbai in 2002. It is one of two half-centuries that Ganguly has in ODIs versus England at home.
Ganguly’s only ODI century against England, as shown earlier, has come at a neutral venue where he averages 43.50 in five games (174 runs at a strike rate of 79.09).
3. Rahul Dravid (10,889 runs in 344 matches; average 39.16; strike rate 71.42; hundreds 12; fifties 83)
The third highest-scorer for India in the ODIs, Rahul Dravid has played 30 of his 344 ODIs against England, scoring 1,012 runs at an average of 38.92 and strike rate of 77.48. He hasn’t scored any of his 12 ODI centuries against England and has its highest score of 92 not out against them, scored in Bristol in 2007 as the captain of the side. He, however, has hit 11 half-centuries against the Englishmen.
In England, Dravid has scored 648 runs in 20 matches at an average of 38.11 and strike rate of 79.31. He has seven ODI fifties on England soil including the 92 not out.

4. Mahendra Singh Dhoni (9,967 runs in 318 matches at an average of 51.37; strike rate 88.40; hundreds 10; fifties 67)
Just 33 runs short of becoming the fourth Indian batsman to score 10,000 runs in ODIs, MS Dhoni has played 44 matches, seven more than Tendulkar. Dhoni has hit 1,425 runs against England at an average of 45.96 which is though less than his overall batting average in ODIs but more than any of the other four top Indian scorers in this format. He has one hundred against England (134 scored in Cuttack in 2017) besides 10 fifties and registered a strike rate of 88.95 against the Englishmen.
In England, Dhoni has scored 492 runs in 17 matches at an average of 37.84 and strike rate of 84.82. His highest score against England in England is 78 not out at Lord’s in 2011. He has five half-centuries in ODIs against England on their soil.
At home, Dhoni has scored 882 runs in 25 matches at an average of 55.12 and strike rate of 94.94. He has one hundred and five half-centuries versus England in India.
When it comes to neutral grounds, Dhoni has played two ODIs versus England – both in Australia – in 2015 and he has 51 runs in them at an average of 25.50 and strike rate of 54.83 with the highest score being 34.
5. Virat Kohli (9.588 runs in 208 matches; average 58.10; strike rate 92.14; hundreds 35; fifties 46)

In England, Kohli’s average (32.33) is much less than his overall average or than that against England. He has 291 runs in 10 matches against the English in England with the highest score of 107 made in Cardiff in 2011. He also has one half-century against them in their den.
