Even though India lost the five-Test series against England with one match still to be played, their head coach Ravi Shastri has made the headlines though not for a cricketing reason. The former Indian all-rounder has found himself in a controversy along with Bollywood actress Nimrat Kaur after rumours surfaced that the duo are allegedly seeing each other. Both personalities have rubbished the reports but it’s only snowballing.

An alleged dating with Kaur hasn’t marked the first controversy involving Shastri and a Bollywood actress. In the 1980s, the former cricketer made the headlines for having an alleged affair with actress Amrita Singh and it is said that the two had almost married each other.

It was then that Shastri, who played 80 Tests and 150 ODIs for India, had come up with a remark which has seen a fresh circulation now. As per a report in India Today, Shastri and Singh got engaged in 1986 but fell short of a marriage for the former felt such a partnership didn’t suit him.

‘Not in favour of having actress wife’

“I definitely don’t want an actress wife. I am chauvinistic. Her home should be her first priority,” Shastri was quoted as saying then. Singh, who later married actor Saif Ali Khan, also replied, “At the moment I’m too involved in my career to give it up. But I’m sure after a couple of years, I will be ready to become a full-time wife and mother.”

Shastri married Ritu Singh in 1990 and Amrita married Khan the next year though none of their marriage survived the distance. Shastri is separated from his wife for a decade now.

A Pune Mirror report claimed that Shastri has been discreetly dating Kaur, 20 years younger to him, for two years now. The fact that the two were roped in as brand ambassadors by a German luxury car-maker since 2015 has also added fuel to the speculation. Shastri made a strong reaction against the reports of his relationship with Kaur saying they were the “biggest load of cow dung”, Mid-Day reported. Kaur, who acted in Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Airlift’, also rubbished the reports in a cheeky tweet.
