It was a delightful and cherishing moment for Tamil Nadu all-rounder Washington Sundar after earning a maiden call-up for the T20 series against Sri Lanka at home. He expressed his excitement to get an opportunity to represent his country at an early stage of his career in a conversation with Cricbuzz. Sundar also had some words of praise for his IPL franchise Rising Pune Supergiants skipper Steve Smith who showed some faith in the off-spinner in the last edition of the tournament.

The 18-year old has performed really well in the domestic cricket and also scored a century in this year’s Duleep Trophy final. He was also the highest wicket-taker and the second highest run-getter in the second edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). The all-rounder would surely want to reflect his current form on the grand stage if given an opportunity in the three-match T20 series against the Lankans.

Smith did what many captains wouldn’t have done

Sundar expressed his views on the support and belief which Smith provided him during the IPL. It was seen that he bowled many overs in the powerplay which is a very difficult job, but the Pune skipper had the confidence in the off-spinner to get him early wickets. He thanks his skipper and the team management for receiving his maiden call-up in the national team.

“Not many captains would play an off-spinner for 11 consecutive games. We have seen very few captains do that in the IPL level. He has shown a lot of belief in me. He threw the ball to me in the first six overs a lot of times. I’m very lucky and thankful to him and the management. Getting an opportunity at such a big stage at this level I really owe a lot to the management and the captain,” said Sundar in a conversation with Cricbuzz.

The young cricketer also revealed that he got to knew about his selection from his father’s friend. It was a quite a moment for him to show his ability at the grand stage in a young age.

“One of my dad’s friends informed (about the selection). I didn’t know actually, I didn’t see the news and someone called and told me,” he added.
