I feel 2006-2007 were possibly our lowest phase: Sachin Tendulkar

Indian legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has recalled the ghost of the 2007 world cup in the Carribean and said that it was the darkest phase in Indian cricket. He said that Indian cricketer made a lot of changes after the first round exit in 2007, which eventually reaped benefits. India lost to Bangladesh and then to Sri Lanka in the group stages of the 2007 world cup.

The former great also added that team India started fresh after the disastrous tour, and were committed towards a particular goal. India went on to lift the 2007 T20I world cup few months later and then the all important 2011 world cup after 4 years.

Fresh start after the 2007 exit

“I think 2006-07  were possibly our lowest [phase]. We didn’t qualify for the Super 8 stage of the 2007 World Cup. But we got back from there and started fresh thinking, we started moving in a new direction,” the right-handed batsman recalled at a programme. “We had to make a lot of changes. And once we had planned what we had to achieve as a team, we were committed to it and the results followed,” he added.

Tendulkar recalled the moment when finally the team started getting the returns for their hard work, and he said that it was not an overnight achievement, and the fact that he ha to wait for 21 years to lift the world cup.  “We had to change a lot of things. Whether they were right or wrong we didn’t know. The change did not happen overnight. We had to wait for results. In fact it took me 21 years of my career to lift that beautiful World Cup trophy,” he said.
