'I have no goals' - New T20I skipper Shakib Al Hasan says overnight results are impossible for Bangladesh
Bangladesh were the runners-up of the 2016 and 2018 editions of the Asia Cup.
Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has urged one to be practical in their thinking and that it is impossible for revival in the team’s fortunes in a day or two. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Shakib as their T20I captain for the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 and the T20 World Cup.
The decision has been made by the BCB keeping in mind that Bangladesh are lagging behind in the shortest format and that the southpaw’s leadership could be a turnaround in their fortunes going forward. Their success in the shortest format is disappointing as they have only managed to win 19 out of 46 previous matches. Bangladesh’s record is so dismal that in the last 11 T20Is since the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE, they have only registered two victories.
My only aim is that we can do well in the World Cup: Shakib Al Hasan
“I have no goals. My only aim is that we can do well in the World Cup and these are the preparations for it”, Shakib told reporters in Dhaka as quoted by Cricbuzz.
“If someone thinks that I can change things within one or two days or someone else will come to change it, then we are living in a fool’s kingdom. If you are able to think practically, our true development will be seen when the team really does well in the World Cup in three months’ time”, he added.
“See, we first played this type of version (format) in 2006. Since then, we have not had good results, except the Asia Cup final. We are far behind in this version from that point so we have no choice but to make a new start,” he further added.
Bangladesh would be looking to create a good impression in the upcoming Asia Cup 2022 starting August 27. They were the runners-up of the previous two editions in 2016 and 2018 respectively.
