'I have not been consistent enough in domestic cricket to put my hand up' - Karun Nair on his national comeback

India cricketer Karun Nair has a unique record matching with the legendary Virender Sehwag in Tests. He is the only Indian along with the Nawab of Najafgarh to score a triple century in the longest format of the game but surprisingly, featured only in three more Tests since then. He has played six Tests and two ODIs in his career so far and is looking forward to making a comeback to the national team.

However, the man himself admits that he hasn’t performed consistently in domestic cricket to be considered again. But Karun Nair has also highlighted the fact that he didn’t get many chances after the heroic triple ton before being eventually dropped. Rather he was just a tourist during India’s tour of England where the team played five Tests and then was axed from the side.

It had also caused an uproar even as the communication between the selectors and players became the talking point. The Karnataka player understands he will have to be consistent in his trade to have any chance of coming back in the Indian team. “Honestly, the comeback has not happened and I have not got many chances from thereon.

“But for that to happen, whenever I have come back to domestic cricket, I have not been consistent enough to put up my hand and say that ‘I need to be playing in the XI’. It is important for me to consistently score runs at domestic cricket. Selection is not in one’s control, so I have to pounce on every opportunity and make them count big time,” he said while speaking to Times Now.

Karun Nair hogged the limelight after scoring the famous triple ton in December 2016 against England at home. Every time, his topic comes up, his feat is talked about more. When asked if the tag of being only second triple-centurion in the country is a bit too much for him, the 28-year-old stated that it isn’t a burden for him and is proud of what he achieved at the international level.

“I don’t think it is too much of a tag. It is definitely not a burden. It is, in fact, something which I can look upon and always go back and feel proud of. It is something that is never going to go away from me, so you need to look only at the positives,” Nair further added.
