The momentum in every sport plays a key role for the respective teams in the bilateral series/tournament. It certainly is a critical factor, when the two teams with equal skills, are up against each other. In Cricket, the T20 format is quite fast-paced and needs quick decision-making, with the momentum to drive the team to victory.

In Indian Premier League (IPL) 2015, Mumbai Indians (MI) started their campaign with four consecutive losses, but changed their momentum with five wins in a row to storm into playoffs and lift the title as well. The same case was witnessed in the IPL 2021, wherein KKR had two wins in first seven fixtures, and then won six out of seven to make it to the Top-four and emerged as a runner-up.

Momentum does count for a lot: Deep Dasgupta

The former Indian cricketer turned commentator Deep Dasgupta reckoned that the momentum or confidence is what the teams take forward in the next games of any tournament. He added that it can surely be positive or negative, depending upon the performance of the teams. Dasgupta thinks that in the T20 format, momentum helps the team to settle down quickly, and the teams need to get going.

“Momentum does count for a lot, you can call it momentum or you can call it confidence as well. It’s the confidence you take forward in the next game or lack of it for that matter, so momentum can be positive or negative. I think momentum makes a lot of difference as you don’t need breaks to settle you down after a loss or something, and you gotta keep going,” Deep Dasgupta told CricTracker’s ‘Not Just Cricket’ show presented by Sky247.net.

Dasgupta further concluded by saying that the momentum/confidence does play a key role in the T20 format. He gave an example of IPL, where the matches are scheduled in such a way that the teams don’t have enough time to analyze the performance in depth, and the momentum is the key in this case.

“There are teams coming thick and fast, so that confidence does matter because you don’t have much time to think about or analyze in depth. I surely think momentum does play a key role,” Dasgupta added.
