In the latest turn of events, Australia’s Test skipper Tim Paine stepped down as the skipper of the side following a sexting scandal. Australia are set to play the all-important Ashes in the month of December and January and will be on the lookout for their new leader. In the same sequence, England star pacer James Anderson has backed Pat Cummins to take the charge of Australia in whites.
Anderson, who has been a superhero in his league, stated that more bowlers should be captain of the side as they think about the game in-depth. However, if he becomes the captain, he will have to be attentive in the game all the while and won’t be able to have some time off.
“I think more bowlers should be captain. The only issue then is trying to get the time off – when you’re off the field, you want to switch off, whereas if you’re captain you’ve got to watch the game and be in it and you can’t switch off maybe as much,” said Anderson as quoted by Sydney Morning Herald.
Pat Cummins is the leader of the bowling attack and you can see he’s got that ability: James Anderson
Anderson stated that Cummins already leads the bowling attack for Australia and why not give him a chance for the captaincy thing. Though there have been reports of ace batter Steve Smith taking up the charge of the side yet again, CA is yet to open their cards on the crucial matter.
“Bowlers do think a lot about the game. We are thinking cricketers now. I think he’d be good at it. You can see he leads brilliantly in the team. He’s a leader of the bowling attack and you can see he’s got that ability, so why not give him a chance?
“There are lots of arguments why it would suit to have a bowler as captain, but it’s just not the done thing, is it? Captains like to look good at first slip and look like they’re making all the field-position changes and doing all the good stuff. But I’m all for it,” Anderson added
