I was excited to see Shubman Gill play for India, says Yuvraj Singh
Both are teammates for their state team Punjab.
Yuvraj Singh has been one of the brightest cricketing talents India has produced but as the rule of nature goes for all, the dashing left-handed batsman has faded with age. At 37, he is no longer seen as a prospect for India on the international stage but his reputation still makes him leave behind the legacy of a tiger, albeit an ageing one.
The Punjab batsman has seen a sharp fall in terms of valuation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the last few years and almost missed the bus this year until getting picked by the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the eleventh hour.
With his entry into the MI ranks, Yuvraj is set to play for the sixth franchise in the IPL since playing the inaugural season in 2008. He has missed only one edition of the tournament so far and it was in 2012 because of cancer. The man overcame the deadly threat and returned to the ground and is also seen as an inspiration for those aiming to pen comeback stories.
Yuvraj recently spoke to reporters over his upcoming stint with the MI, who also bought veteran Sri Lanka bowler Lasith Malinga alongside the former in the last auction. There, besides saying that he looks to contribute with the bat to ease the pressure off captain Rohit Sharma’s back while opening the innings, the cricketer also spoke on young talent Shubman Gill.
Yuvraj confident about Shubman’s success
Shubman, who also hails from Punjab and plays alongside Yuvraj Singh in the first-class tournament like Ranji Trophy, recently made his international debut against New Zealand and his senior partner was ecstatic about it. Though Shubman could not do much in the two ODIs he has played so far, scoring just nine and seven runs in seamer-friendly conditions, Yuvraj was convinced that the 19-year-old is going to attain greater heights in days to come.
“I am extremely happy for him. I was excited to see him (Shubman) play for India. It is amazing, how he has improved so much. He came back from the (India) A tour, scored a lot of runs in domestic cricket, straightaway got an opportunity (to play for India),” Yuvraj was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
