I was insulted several times by Gautam Gambhir: Hari Gidwani

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has a reputation for being a hothead on the field. He has been embroiled in many controversies in the past. Be it international games or a domestic fixtures, Gambhir has seen getting in a heated face-off with fellow cricketers. But, this time, his off-field behavior has brought him in the news.

Delhi selector Hari Gidwani has stated in a recent interview that he was insulted by Gautam Gambhir. The 62-year-old former first-class cricket said that he was insulted several times by the Gautam Gambhir during selection meetings in the 2015-16 season. Gambhir led the team in the previous season.

“I was insulted several times by Gautam. He asked questions like ‘who made you a selector and how many matches have you played?’ I shot back saying it was none of his business to ask who appointed me. I also told him that I have played Duleep Trophy, Irani Cup and matches against touring teams boasting of world-class attacks.

The selector added that he was shocked after his co-selectors did interfere. This incident also made the veteran think about resigning from the post mid-way through the Ranji season.

“What shocked me was none of my co-selectors said anything to Gautam about his behaviour.”

“I contemplated resigning midway into the Ranji Trophy season, but I was persuaded to continue. I don’t know what lies ahead for me in the next season,” a hurt Gidwani told mid-day.

Talking further, Gidwani said that he was not very optimistic about the future of Delhi’s cricket.

“We have talented players, but they are not realizing their potential. They need to be consistent,” Gidwani signed off.
