I wasn’t good enough in Test cricket admits Eoin Morgan

In modern-day cricket, there are very few players who play all three formats of the game and are top performers. It has become an era of specialist and Eoin Morgan is England’s leader in white-ball cricket. He played 16 Tests between 2010 and 2012 but couldn’t cement a spot for himself or add enough value for the team to be around longer. Morgan has now admitted that he “wasn’t good enough” in Tests.

The 32-year-old admitted that he got his chances and was when Andrew Strauss was the captain who he rates as an exceptional leader. Morgan is one of the cricketers who looks back and thinks he couldn’t capitalize on the chances the team afforded him.

I had my chances

“I had my chance to play Test cricket. I played in a very good team, in a very good environment, under an exceptional captain in Andrew Strauss. I think a lot of people that come and go in Test match cricket and don’t make the most of their opportunity sometimes look back and wish that they could have been part of a better team or a more expansive or disciplined team,” Morgan was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

“There’s always a different aspect because it’s a failure in a way. I think people find it hard to say they just weren’t good enough and I don’t think I was,” he added.

The English team hasn’t traditionally done well in the subcontinent but very recently Joe Root’s side defeated Sri Lanka 3-0. It goes into the records as their first whitewash overseas since 1963. Their gameplay and strategies were quite evidently positive with a lot more intent and intention which helped them beat Sri Lanka. Morgan isn’t sure how much of it is an influence from the way they play ODI cricket and thinks Root is the best person to answer that.

“I’m not sure (if England’s Test approach has been influenced by Morgan’s ODI team). Joe can only answer that or guys that play in the team. One thing I see particularly on this tour, where the guys won 3-0 and it was unbelievable to watch, was that they’re playing with clarity and the way that they want to. That for me signifies that they’re playing in Joe Root’s way and with everybody in the team’s way. To watch that as a fan is great to see,” the England ODI and T20I skipper added.

World Cup favourites

The Brits will be hosting the World Cup next year and England with the brand of cricket they have been playing are firm favourites to win the tournament. Talking about that Morgan said, “Next year, at the moment we are favourites, so presuming nothing goes horrifically wrong between now and the start of the World Cup, that will probably stay the same.”
