'I will have a conversation with him soon' - Mahela Jayawardene after Ishan Kishan's poor run in IPL 2022
Ishan Kishan has scored 199 runs in eight matches played so far
The Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene has shared his opinion on Ishan Kishan’s performances and said that he’ll be having a chat with the youngster soon. He said that he did not feel the need to bring up the conversation earlier, but now the time has arrived.
Mumbai Indians have failed to stand up to their ‘five-time champions’ tag after eight straight losses in the IPL 2022. They are yet to open their account this season, and it seems like no other team is scared of an encounter with Mumbai now. The team and the players have had a dry run so far, and are yet to put up a complete performance this season.
One of the biggest shocks for their team is their young opening batter Ishan Kishan failing miserably in back-to-back games. Kishan was purchased for a huge sum of INR 15.25 CR but he has not performed up to the mark to make it worth it. “He has struggled a bit, we have given him the freedom to play his natural game. I haven’t yet spoken to him today but I will have a conversation with him soon,” said Jayawardene in the post-match press conference.
Jayawardene feels the need to review the batters’ performances
Mumbai Indians became the first team to be knocked out of the playoffs race after being unable to register a win on the board. Both their openers had a good start with the bat in the initial games, especially Kishan impressed everyone with his skills as he posted back-to-back half-centuries. But his performance has fallen off the cliff badly and he needs to be trained under such circumstances.
“I need to review the batters’ performance. It has been a concern so far but this is a senior group so we need to keep pushing. We want to keep the batting unit consistent as far as we can,” he added.
Jayawardene did not blame Kishan solely for the team’s failure as he said that the whole batting unit’s performance has been a concern. The team has been dependent upon one or two players from the middle order to anchor their innings, but they failed to do so because of the added pressure.
