One of the greatest women’s cricketers to have played the game, Mithali Raj announced her retirement recently and she has been certainly an inspiration for many women in the country. Mithali made her ODI debut in 1999 and she went on to play for more than 22 years in international cricket for India.
The right-hander played 232 ODIs and scored 7805 runs at an average of 50.68 while collecting the most runs in international cricket. She last played in the Women’s World Cup 2022 for India in New Zealand in March this year and it will be interesting to see the second innings of her career if she chooses to play an important role in Women’s development through administration role or through her coaching skills.
I can use my experience to good use: Mithali Raj
Speaking about taking up a position in the administration, Mithali noted that she will be quite happy to grab it given her experience and noted the different phases she had to undergo in her long career in India. She mentioned the examples of Belinda Clark and Clare Connor who have succeded in their roles with their country boards respectively and was optimistic about women returning to success in administration roles too.
“I would love to (be in administration) if that comes my way, knowing the sort of experience I have had over the years. Being a player, seeing the different phases maybe yeah, I can use my experience to good use,” Mithali was quoted as saying by India Today.
“You can have a woman in a certain position because women understand women’s cricket much better. I would say that because they have been over the years part of the team and fraternity. Like how Belinda Clark has got her experience to shape Cricket Australia or for that matter Clare Connor has done a great job with ECB. If given opportunities, I’m sure women can be efficient in jobs that they can do for women’s cricket in administration,” she added.
