ICC charges Irfan Ansari for breaching the Anti-Corruption Code

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has charged the cricket organiser and the former employee of Sharjah Cricket Stadium for breaching the Anti-Corruption Code. He has been provisionally suspended with immediate effect after he was found guilty on three counts by the world cricketing body. However, ICC has also given him 14 days from May 19 to respond to the charges imposed on him and has cleared that they won’t comment on the same on the matter further now.

According to the reports, the charges are related to the incident when Ansari had approached Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed during the ODI series against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates last year. Sarfraz had immediately reported the same to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after which he had earned a lot of praise. Only last year, a few players were punished by the board for failing to report the fixing approaches during the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

ICC releases the statement

The ICC released the statement on its official website confirming the charges on Irfan Ansari. “Mr Ansari is party to the code through his position as a person who is affiliated to a team that participates in International Matches and the Coach of the One Stop Tourism and Multiplex international teams who participate in domestic matches in the UAE,” the statement read. He was charged for breaching three clauses according to the anti-corruption code of ICC which are:

Article 2.3.3 – directly soliciting, inducing, enticing or encouraging a participant to breach Code Article 2.3.2

Article 2.4.6 – failure or refusal to cooperate with the ACU’s investigation by failing to provide accurately and completely the information and/or documentation requested by the ACU in October 2017

Article 2.4.6 – failure or refusal to cooperate with the ACU’s investigation by failing to provide accurately and completely the information and/or documentation requested by the ACU in February 2018

It remains to be seen if PCB reacts to this as all the home games of Pakistan are held in the UAE itself and the players will have to take more care now.
