The 1998 edition of the tournament saw the emergence of Virender Sehwag, the man from Delhi who went on to score two triple hundreds in his Test career. The tournament was played in South Africa and eventually won by England. India, could not make it to the finals due to a low net run rate and neither did Sehwag have a great competition but he got the exposure needed to excel. On the other hand, West Indian Chris Gayle emerged as the top scorer of the tournament with 364 runs and a top score of 141*. The big Jamaican, who now has 16 T20 hundreds to his name, introduced himself in the best possible manner.
