India’s World Cup campaign has already begun with the warm-up match against New Zealand at the Kennington Oval in London. The Men in Blue’s first match in the main round is against South Africa on June 5 and Virat Kohli’s men are considered as one of the favourites to win the championship. Meanwhile, prior to the main round, India is faced with a couple of injury concerns.

In the warm-up match, India didn’t field Kedar Jadhav and Vijay Shankar, both of whom developed injuries during the practice sessions on Friday. Shankar was smacked flush on the forearm by left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed, who’s one of the backups for the Indian team. Thereafter, the Tamil Nadu all-rounder left the field as a precautionary measure and was taken for a scan.

“Vijay Shankar was hit on his right forearm during practice on Friday. He underwent scans and no fracture has been detected. BCCI Medical Team is aiding him in his recovery,” BCCI posted on their official Twitter handle.

Vijay Shankar up and running

In the meantime, it has been learned that Shankar hasn’t sustained a fracture on his right forearm as per reports in India Today. Nevertheless, he is unlikely to be a part of the second-warm up match as well against Mashrafe Mortaza’s Bangladesh on May 28 at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff.

Shankar’s forearm still has bruises and it will take some time to heal. Prior to the match against the Black Caps, Shankar took some throwdowns ‘single-handed’ during a net session and would be hoping to get back in shape before the main round of the mega event gets underway.

As far as Shankar is concerned, he made his ODI debut earlier this year versus Australia when Hardik Pandya was sent back after a television show controversy. The 28-year-old cricketer bagged the opportunity with both hands and performed exceptionally with both bat and ball.

He impressed with the bat, plying his trade in the middle order and eventually made the cut for the World Cup. MSK Prasad, the Indian chief selector also said that he would be tried at the much-debated number four slot during the 50-overs tournament.
